Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme developed by the National Cyber Security Centre. It sets out five technical security controls that every organisation should have in place to get protection from common forms of internet based threats. Achieving certification means an independent certification body has verified that those controls are operational.
Certification is valid for 12 months and can be renewed annually. The process involves a self-assessment questionnaire that is reviewed and verified by an accredited assessor and certification body.

For organisations requiring a little bit of support, the process can take between two and four weeks from initial call to certifications. For more complex environments and support requirements, the timeline can typically be a number of weeks — this can all depend on how quickly you can address any gaps identified in the assessment. We work to flag issues early so nothing should come as a surprise.
A Cyber Advisor provides trusted, NCSC assured guidance to help organisations improve cyber security in a practical and proportionate way. We focus on implementing Cyber Essentials controls that reduce exposure to common forms of internet based threats. Cyber Advisor status provides extra confidence that the advice is credible without unnecessary cost or complexity. Cyber Advisor support is particularly valuable for SMEs and supply‑chain organisations seeking recognised, UK government‑aligned assurance.
ISO 27001 is a different standard and does not substitute for Cyber Essentials in most contexts. Organisations can choose to hold both — as they can complement each other. Many organisations tend to choose to certify with Cyber Essentials first in order to demonstrate protection from common forms of internet based threats, then progress to further certifications. If you already hold ISO 27001 and need Cyber Essentials, we can make the process very straightforward.
